A Back Deck Story: Chapter 3 | Designing and framing the first deck/porch

This post is going to be more of a vlog than a blog. This is where I realized that I could be recording the process. The simple act of recording what I was doing held me accountable and I was less likely to sit and daydream about the next project as opposed to working on the one at hand.

The first video runs through the designing of the deck. I usually wing it which is not a good plan of action. This time I put pencil to paper. Taking measurments, knowing each piece of wood required, it’s quantity and length, the hardware needed to install it will save you money in the long run not to mention cut down on the number of trips made to the store. They know me by name at the hardware store and thank me daily for my spending at their store. Ummmm… you’re welcome? *facepalm*.

In this next video, I’m going to discuss and show how I built the frame and foundation of the deck that comes off the kitchen entrance. How do you know a post is going to be good in the long run? What’s the best and easiest hardware to use? Once I’m done blabbing, then we’ll speed through the building of the frame. (But not so fast that you won’t be able to see how it’s happening). This is a half day job but it took me most of the day given all the momming I had to do throughout. Didn’t realize how much until I went to edit the video and had to cut out 60% of the footage which was of me just talking with the kids. Ha! Another reason it’s taken almost 6 years to get to where we are.
